1976 Trans-Am Champion, driven by George Follmer

In 1976, the SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) welcomed the Group 4 and Group 5 Porsches into the mix with open arms. For the first time, the the popular Trans-Am series was split into two classes; the Porsche 934s would compete in Category II against some of the most exotic machinery seen in Trans-Am to that time.

Vasek Polak, a Southern California-based Porsche dealer, bought five 934s - two to race in the popular series, the other three were sold. Several different drivers drove the Vasek Polak cars over the year, though the primary drivers were George Follmer and Hurley Haywood. Haywood led the Trans-Am points standings from the first race and held that lead until the final race at Trois Rivieres. Throughout the season, Follmer battled not only his teammate, but also the well-driven Porsches of Al Holbert and Ludwig Heimrath. In the final event Follmer led from flag-to-flag, earning himself a nine-point advantage and the title Trans-Am Champion!
