Back to the Porsche 934 RSR

1977 Le Mans 24 Hours, Winner, Group 4, driven by Wollek, Gurdjian, and "Steve"

Think of Le Mans, and Porsche comes to mind. Think of Porsche at Le Mans and one driver comes to mind: Bob Wollek. Regarded as perhaps the best Porsche driver of all time, Bob Wollek drove Porsche race cars at Le Mans an amazing twenty-two times between the years of 1975 through 2000.

Entered by Kremer Racing and sponsored by Burton of London, the #58 Porsche 934 RSR Turbo got off to a brilliant start. Like its Group 4 competitors, the 934 suffered mechanical failures that slowed its progress: a failed Cardan joint, steering and minor suspension problems. The vastly experienced Kremer team made efficient repairs every time the car needed them, keeping Wollek, Philippe Gurdjian and "Steve" competitive.

At the end of 24 Hours, the Burton car had covered 2,526 miles, finishing 7th place overall and 1st in Group 4. The only other Porsche 934 to finish the race was the JMS Racing "X-Ray" entry. Porsche also earned outright victory with the Martini 936/77 and a Group 5 win thanks to the JMS "X-Ray" 935.
